Chronic Pain Back & Neck Pain

From Frequent Epidural Injections to Periodic Maintenance Care

Patricia had lived with chronic back and neck pain for years. Her work required long hours of sitting, and according to her 2011 letter, she had relied on epidural injections approximately every 6–8 weeks for many years.

After relocating to Saipan, she was referred to Guolong Wang. She had never tried acupuncture or Chinese medicine before and wrote that she initially “expected absolutely nothing from the treatment.”

Patricia reported significant relief after her first visit. After approximately 6–7 appointments, she wrote that she only found it necessary to return approximately once every 3–4 months for maintenance care. She also reported that she no longer needed to leave the island for the pain treatments she had previously relied upon.

“Kevin has literally improved the quality of my life in a way that I cannot adequately describe with words.”

According to her mother, Natsumi had experienced years of back and leg pain and was having only about three menstrual periods per year. Her mother wrote that Natsumi had previously taken hormone medication for a year without improvement in the regularity of her cycle.

After a course of 12 treatments with Guolong Wang, her mother reported that Natsumi began having a menstrual period each month and experienced substantially less leg pain.

“After going through 12 treatments with Mr. Kevin Wang she has her menstrual every month and she doesn’t suffer so much of leg pains.”

Pamela described years of significant physical distress before being introduced to Guolong Wang after an acute episode of severe back pain. She reported that her back felt normal after her third treatment and later described major improvements in her sleep, daily functioning, and overall quality of life.

Editor’s note Pamela’s original letter also discusses her broader emotional landscape at the time, including periods of low mood and the role of medication. The account here is intentionally limited to her self-reported experience with back pain, sleep, daily functioning, and quality of life. It is not presented as treatment for any mental-health condition, nor does it suggest that patients should alter or discontinue prescribed medication.

“I am able to lead a normal life, cook, and have another second chance in life again. I feel like 20 years younger.”

Sciatica Chronic Pain Historical Cases

More Than 20 Years of Treating Sciatic Pain

Stories from Guolong Wang’s years of practice in Saipan

Over more than two decades of practice in Saipan, Guolong Wang has encountered sciatic pain in many forms. The following accounts — drawn from his recollections and from a patient’s written statement — trace a few of the cases that shaped his understanding of how differently sciatic pain can present, and how differently it can respond.

Around 2001 Practitioner recollection

His Younger Brother

According to Guolong Wang, his younger brother — a martial artist — developed severe sciatic pain that made walking extremely difficult. This became an important early case in his practice, one that influenced how he thought about the different presentations of sciatic pain and the need for individualized treatment rather than a fixed protocol.

The experience with his brother’s case helped shape a working principle he would carry into later practice: that two patients with pain in the same area may still require very different approaches.

December 2005 Practitioner recollection

A Referral from a Colleague

A garment-factory worker in Saipan, suffering from severe sciatica, was introduced to Guolong Wang by a colleague after other treatment had not helped. Guolong Wang recalls recognizing the condition immediately and describing it, in his own assessment, as straightforward to treat with traditional Chinese medicine — though the treatment itself, including acupuncture, would involve some discomfort.

A Patient’s Written Account

In a letter dated March 15, 2011, a patient — a garment-factory mechanic in Saipan of Chinese-Korean background — described developing severe sciatica in 2005 that left him unable to work. He wrote that he first returned to China for treatment at an orthopedic hospital, where surgery was recommended; afraid of surgery, he came back to Saipan and sought further treatment at a Korean acupuncture clinic, which he described as ultimately ineffective. According to his letter, his condition worsened to the point that he could not get out of bed or eat unassisted, and he had decided to return to China, unable to continue working.

He wrote that a colleague introduced him to Guolong Wang, and that he began treatment on December 13, 2005. After six treatments, he described the result as a “miracle,” and reported that he had experienced no further pain or need for treatment in the six years since.

“After six times treatment, with no medicine it was a ‘miracle.’ For the past six years, I have no pain or treatment.”

Guolong Wang’s treatment philosophy

Pain in the same place does not necessarily come from the same pattern.

These experiences — across more than twenty years and patients from very different backgrounds — taught Guolong Wang that different patients may carry different histories, physical conditions, and responses to treatment. His approach therefore emphasizes assessment, observation, and adjusting treatment according to the individual, rather than applying the same protocol to everyone.
