You’re Curious About Tai Chi

Gentle Movement. Calm Mind. Better Balance.

Tai Chi is often described as “meditation in motion.” Originating in China as a martial art, it has evolved into a graceful, low-impact practice embraced worldwide for its wellness benefits.

Unlike high-intensity exercise, Tai Chi asks little of the body — yet gives back a great deal. The movements are slow, circular, and continuous. The breath is full and unhurried. The mind settles.

You don’t need to be fit, flexible, or coordinated to begin. You simply need to show up and breathe.

  • May improve balance Especially valuable as we age.
  • Supports flexibility Gentle stretching through full range of motion.
  • May reduce stress Encourages the body’s natural relaxation response.
  • Promotes gentle strength Builds legs, core, and stability without strain.
  • Improves body awareness Notice tension you didn’t know you carried.
  • Encourages better breathing Deeper, slower, more intentional.

Common Questions

I’ve never practiced Tai Chi. Is this beginner friendly?

Yes — completely. Master Jiang teaches to the room, so complete beginners and experienced practitioners both feel supported. Movements are introduced slowly, with clear instruction and modifications available.

Do I need to be flexible?

No. Flexibility is something you build, not something you need before starting. Tai Chi’s gentle, flowing motions may help improve your range of motion over time — no splits required.

Is this suitable for seniors?

Yes. Tai Chi is widely recommended for older adults because it’s low-impact, slow, and focuses on balance and stability. Many of our students are in their 60s, 70s, and beyond.

What should I wear?

Loose, comfortable clothing that lets you move and breathe freely. Flat-soled shoes or bare feet are both fine. Avoid jeans, tight skirts, or restrictive footwear.

Can I join just one class?

Yes. A single drop-in class ($39) is a wonderful way to experience Master Jiang’s teaching before committing to the full intensive.

What if I have chronic pain or an injury?

Many people turn to Tai Chi precisely because they live with chronic pain or are recovering from injury. Please consult your physician before joining, and let Master Jiang know about any conditions so he can offer appropriate modifications.

What happens if it rains?

Sessions are held outdoors on the beach. If weather affects a session, we’ll reach out with any updates on timing.

Is Tai Chi a religion or spiritual practice?

No. Tai Chi is a movement and breathing practice rooted in Chinese martial arts and Traditional Chinese Medicine. People of all backgrounds and beliefs practice it purely for its physical and mental benefits.

Why I Created Pele Awakening

After seven years in tech, I realized success meant little if I wasn’t healthy. Tai Chi changed that. Pele Awakening was born from that journey — a place to help others reconnect with movement, stillness, and themselves, the same way I did.
